In conjuction with Isabell Heimerdinger’s solo exhibition Waiting, Acting Waiting, Western Front Performance Art presents a panel discussion moderated by Vancouver-based artist and writer Rachelle Sawatsky. Featured panelists include SFU graduate student Sharon Kahanoff and Western Front Media Director/Curator Alissa Firth-Eagland.
Rachelle Sawatsky is a Vancouver based artist and writer who graduated from Emily Carr Institute in 2005 where she received the Helen Pitt Award. She has exhibited her work in Vancouver, Montreal and Barcelona and has written catalogue texts on Vancouver artists Kyla Mallett and Christian Kliegel. Most recently, she curated Pop Philosophy at Access gallery.
Sharon Kahanoff is a filmmaker, artist and writer currently finishing her Masters in Fine Arts at Simon Fraser University. Her artwork has been exhibited locally in both galleries and cinemas, and has also been published in numerous catalogues, magazines and other art publications. Kahanoff is a board member of Artspeak gallery and an active contributor to the Vancouver art community.
Alissa Firth-Eagland is incoming Director/Curator of Western Front Media. Prior to this, she independently commissioned experimental projects and partnerships across communities, institutions, and disciplines. She has coordinated projects for organizations such as the TRANZ <--> TECH Toronto International Media Art Biennial, Fado Performance Inc. in collaboration with the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art, Cultural Human Resources Canada, the Banff Centre,Toronto Alternative Arts Fair International, and the Images Festival of Independent Film and Video. In 2006 she was researcher-in-residence at the Nordic Institute for Contemporary Art in Helsinki, Finland. Also an artist, she works in and between video, publication, and performance.
